Modern Life is 5hit - Semantic Progression
|
I didn't know that I was traversing the footbridge between youth and middle age until I had arrived on the other side - now that I am here I find my jealousy of the youth manifesting itself in a hatred of everything they do/say/wear.
With that in mind, I would like to talk about Semantic Progression - the evolution of words. I propose a thread in the following format:-
Tell me about a word which has evolved in usage during your lifetime giving explanations of how it was used when you learned it, and how dem yout have butchered it since. In order to avoid the inevitable Splatt, I will make the first post my first effort...

IMHO The impact of an interconnected was world via the internet, globalisation and abundance of media outlets which for the UK has accelerated the “Americanisation ” of our culture. The Septics dominate TV and film and their corporations dominate the Western world. We also adopted the neoliberal economic model and via consumerism worship celebrities and no marks. In a nutshell we are becoming a narcissistic culture just like the states and the values that matter like community and family are being lost. Something most only appreciate in later life when they realise you don’t live for that long.
Happy Wednesday ;-)

Obviously I don't want to be called Sir either, hence the smiley thingy in my post. But I don't really want to be called buddy or mate five times in a sentence by someone half my age either. I mean, in the wider context of what is important in life, i really don't give a shit. Clearly. But it's just a silly thread and the buddy thing does seem to be on the rise. Okay buddy? All good buddy. Cool, cool...

Fivetide - good one: I feel like saying "I am not your buddy, buddy". On the other hand if a lithe young female assistant calls me "love" I shall probably not complain.

Clearly! To humiliate and inform you that your opinion is shit and I know more than you thus ending rational conversation! Clearly!

I really don't like being called "Sir".
It now seems compulsory for employees in a whole range of service jobs.
Compulsory respect is totally meaningless

Seem to get called 'buddy' a lot these days by strangers, and often too many times in succession, e.g. Hey buddy, have you got what you need buddy, let me know buddy, cheers buddy etc...
"Sir" will do just fine. :)

Thanks gph.
So, another Americanism that has no place in the English language. Especially when uttered by Kevin Kilbane.

Screen
Original usage: a tall wooden barrier in 3 or 4 sections, behind which to dress or undress.
Modern usage: something you wipe your knob on.

People can't converse anymore. Which can be a blessing but it's still bizarre.

One that irritates me is the greeting
" Yaworwhy?"
This is said generally with a northern accent but is now so widespread it really could be any idiot. It is essentially hello with the additional how are you thrown in.
My stock answer is " I'm good thanks"
